Towers and Tales is a celebration of children's literature, born of formers children’s laureate Niamh Sharkey’s wish that all children in Ireland should be gifted a book
The inaugural Towers and Tales children’s book festival was held in Lismore on Saturday 18 April 2015. The castle and historic town of Lismore, along with some glorious April sunshine, provided the magical and inspirational setting for the festival which featured a line up including PHILIP ARDAGH, MARIE-LOUISE FITZPATRICK, SHANE HEGARTY, CHRIS RIDDELL, NIAMH SHARKEY, DARREN SHAN and SARAH MCINTYRE who said attending the festival was "like being inside a storybook"!
With help of Children’s Books Ireland, over 300 books were gifted to children who attended the festival!
Free and ticketed events proved a great success with most selling out completely and visitor numbers of over 1,100 realised throughout the day. Events included talks by the authors and illustrators, a Book Doctor and Inspiration Station, illustration exhibition, book–making demonstrations and pop up story readings with costumed characters. The Gruffalo was particularly popular with children and adults alike and made several appearances throughout the festival, having first being spotted running amok on the Castle roof! Those merely wanting to enjoy the atmosphere in the Woodshed Café were spoiled for choice with delicious snacks including crepes, fresh juices, pizza and hotdogs.
Visitor feedback has been exceptionally positive; as one visitor put it: "the whole day was simply magical".
2016’s Towers and Tales promises to be bigger and better than the 2015 year’s festival!
