< Go back to Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford

The Story So Far

From humble beginnings in 2007 when 918 participants registered to take part in the inaugural Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford, the event has now grown to become one of Ireland’s Ultimate leisure cycles. It has developed into a two day festival of cycling with over 6500 participants taking part and 500 volunteers extending the Waterford Welcome, as well as countless spectators making the tour a highlight in Waterford’s festivals and events calendar!

The Tour came about because of the desire of the people of Waterford to pay tribute to the name of Sean Kelly in a manner befitting his legendary cycling status. It also came about because of Sean Kelly’s willingness to lend his name to an event which would benefit his own area and his own people. Finally, it came about because of the willingness of Waterford City and County Council and Waterford Sports Partnership to come together with the cycling community to plan and deliver this exciting event.

Since the inception of the event it has always been the intention of the organisers and the communities of Waterford to showcase not only the wonderful scenery and physical landscape that the county has to offer but also the warmth and friendliness of the people of Waterford who provide such great hospitality to the 6500 participants over the course of the weekend. All of the hard work has reaped a number of rewards and awards for the event including:

2012 - Being one of the events included in the ‘World's Ultimate Cycling Races: 300 of the greatest cycling events’, published by Collins.

2012 - Voted ‘Best Leisure Cycling Event’ at the Cycling Ireland Awards.

2016 - In the year that we celebrated our 10th Anniversary we were delighted to be once again Voted ‘Best Leisure Cycling Event’ at the Cycling Ireland Awards
